KIPP Nashville students spread love, inspire hope with music video

If stress and anxiety about the upcoming school year have you feeling overwhelmed, take five minutes to watch this music video. We guarantee it will make you feel better.

Students from five KIPP Nashville charter public schools are spreading a musical message of love and hope, aimed to inspire as we all face a slew of challenges and uncertainties. The students, ranging from elementary to high school age, collaborated with their choir teachers to create their own version of “Everything’s Gonna be Alright.”

The song includes raps written and performed by two students from KIPP Nashville Collegiate High School as well as spoken word using different verses from Maya Angelou’s poem “I rise.”

The rap performed by 11th grader Kayla T. beautifully encapsulates the purpose of the entire video, which is to harness the power of “the voices of the youth.” The lines written by Kayla include:

“KIPP was founded to start a difference for every black and brown student to reach full potential, so let’s start a movement to spread positivity and awareness with our beautiful voices … Like MLK said, hate cannot drive out hate, only love can. And we are livin’ proof, for every dark night, there’s a brighter day, so as we all come together, our voices will rise and never be silenced.”

Later in the video, the rap performed by Kayla’s classmate, Cortez S., builds on the message of spreading positivity with lines such as:

“Gotta smile on your face, then we’re doin’ it right, and you keep a lot of light in your soul, take that energy, project it on the people who don’t and tell that person everything is gonna be alright.”
